On July 1, Shaanxi Normal University held the 2020 Graduation Ceremony and Degree Conferment in the main venue of Shanglin Gymnasium on its Chang’an campus, other offline branch venues and through online live-streaming.
About 360 class 2020 students, representing about 4300 undergraduate students and 3600 graduate students, attended the main venue.
Other students who had returned to campus attended the event held at separate venues at their own schools, institutes and centers, watching live broadcast of the main venue ceremony.
Other students who had not returned to campus watched the live-streaming broadcast with their parents and family.
The university also announced that those students who were unable to attend the on-campus graduation ceremony could come back and attend one ceremony any year in the future.
News outlets and platforms such as People’s Daily, Xuexi.cn, Sina Weibo, Shaanxi TV Station, Shaanxi Provincial Department of Education, Cnwest.com, joined SNNU Weibo and Douyin accounts in live-streaming, and nearly 2.8 million viewers watched the broadcast online.
SNNU officials Cheng Guangxu, You Xuqun, Lu Shengli, Wang Yong’an, Yang Zupei, Li Lei, Ren Xiaowei, Dong Zhibao, Ma Xiaoyun and Luo Yonghui, deans and directors of schools, institutes, centers, and departments, members of Academic Degree Evaluation Committee, faculty representatives, student counsellors, joined the graduating students at the venues.
After national flag was raised and national anthem was played and sung, vice president Yang Zupei announced the university’s decisions to commend Class 2020 outstanding undergraduate students and graduate students. CPC SNNU Committee vice secretary Lu Shengli announced the list of alumni liaison. CPC SNNU Committee secretary Cheng Guangxu and president You Xuqun presented certificates to the students.
The four seventh SNNU Outstanding Alumni were announced at the ceremony. They are Class ‘77 Department of Political Education alumnus Sun Haohui, famous writer and theorist in the history of Chinese civilization; Class ‘84 Department of Biology alumnus Zheng Hu, famous cartoonist and director of Children’s Film Committee of China Film Association; Class ‘93 Department of Chinese Language and Literature alumnus Kang Zhen, famous cultural scholar and Beijing Normal University professor; and Class ‘93 Department of Arts alumnus Zhou Yixin, famous painter and dean of Ningxia Academy of Calligraphy and Painting.
Their pre-recorded acceptance speeches were played on the giant screens in the gymnasium, as they were unable to attend the event in person.
Each of the graduating students will receive a customized sandalwood seal with their names inscribed on it.
They also presented the Yiyuan Care Fund, which had been donated by the graduating students for aiding Class 2024 students with financial difficulties, to secretary Cheng and president You.
Speaking on behalf of faculty members, School of Education dean Chen Peng encouraged the students to learn how to be a human, to do things, to cooperate and to learn, so as to better face difficulties and challenges, and write their own life chapters.
School of Mathematics and Information Science public-funded teacher education student Xiao Shengpeng spoke on behalf of undergraduate students, vowing to teach for China as a carrier of western red candle spirit.
School of Foreign Languages master’s student Jiang Lidan spoke on behalf of graduate students, saying she would work hard as a translator to tell Chinese stories to the world.
Vice president Dong Zhibao announced the university’s decision to confer degrees to Class ‘20 students and You Xuqun conferred degree diplomas to thirty students.
In his speech titled Sharpening Yourselves Towards a Wonderful Life, You Xuqun said the students were graduating in an unprecedentedly unusual year, amid coronavirus pandemic and resulting downward economy and employment pressure. He hoped they could understand difficulties were challenges as well as opportunities, and willpower and ability were the prerequisites of attaining objectives, asked them to never give up their faith and integrity, and assured them each of them would reap the best results with their hard work.
In the sound of the School Song and under the School Flag, teachers and students waved goodbye to each other, as the ceremony drew to a close and the students embark on a new journey.
